Pros and Cons of Hardwood

Hardwood has several advantages. The wide variety of styles and colors make it very aesthetically pleasing, but they are also easy to clean. Getting rid of settling dust and other debris is as easy as running a vacuum or sweeping a broom through the room. Hardwood is quite durable and when properly taken care of it, it can last for many decades without needing much more than an occasional polishing. However, hardwood is also much louder. It does not absorb any noise, so if you use it all throughout the house, noise from kids, pets or TVs in other rooms will echo throughout your home. It is also easily scratched by toys or furniture if you are not careful. Finally, hardwood is much colder. Many people end up putting area rugs over large portions of the floor

Carpet is also very aesthetically pleasing, especially if you enjoy a wide variety of colors and varying degrees of plushness. It is warmer during the cold winter months and does not require additional rug purchases, and it is also much quieter because carpet absorbs sound. Additionally, your furniture will not easily slide around on carpet the way it would on hardwood floors. Carpeting does have cons, though. It is never quite clean enough unless you hire a professional carpet cleaner on a very regular basis. Carpets hold on to allergens, which means anybody who suffers from allergies in the home could be uncomfortable. Finally, carpet does not last as long. Even when well kept, it will eventually wear down and typically needs replaced every 10 years.

If you still cannot decide between carpet and hardwood, perhaps you should use a little of both. Gorgeous hardwood will add an element to the kitchen, bathroom and living room, while carpet will keep the bedrooms cozy and comfortable.
