As the top oriental rug repair company in the area, we get questions every day about proper cleaning techniques. Despite being such a popular style of rug, the average person doesn’t know where to begin when it comes to keeping their oriental rugs in tip-top shape. Let’s set the record straight once and for all by tackling this issue head-on. Here are some tips for cleaning your oriental rugs at home.

Cleaning Spots on Your Oriental Rug

Whether you spill a drink, track in dirt with muddy shoes, or drop some food, there are several ways your oriental rug can become stained in one spot. Since cleaning too much can damage these rugs, it’s important to only clean when and where it’s needed. For spot cleaning, start by dabbing the area with a paper towel to capture all of the excess moisture. Don’t use bleach or any form of soap. Next, mix some water and white vinegar in a spray bottle and apply it to the stain. Use a toothbrush or soft hairbrush and gently scrape the stain. Swap the vinegar for club soda if the stain is acidic. Once the stain seems to be removed, use a fan or wet vacuum to dry the spot. Solids will require a blunt knife or spatula to be removed. As the top oriental rug repair company in the area, we only recommend performing spot cleaning when necessary.

Cleaning Your Entire Rug

Spot cleaning is only required when there are accidents, however, your oriental rug will also need routine upkeep in order to stay in excellent condition. Understanding how to routinely clean your rug can also increase its lifespan. Start off by shaking or beating your rug to get any loose dirt, dust, or other particles out. If you have some concerns about your rug’s durability, you should do this gently or avoid it altogether. Next, mix warm water and shampoo in a bowl. Be sure to use a shampoo that’s safe for wools. Mix the solution until you start to see the foam. Scoop up a small portion of foam with your hand or a sponge and lay it on the rug. Avoid getting the rug wet at this point. Use the sponge to scrub your carpet in the pile direction. Rinse your sponge by placing a small amount of water on top of the rug and reabsorbing it with a dryer sponge. Try to keep the water from soaking through to the bottom side of the rug.
