Does re-dyeing hurt the value of an antique rug?

Documented, professionally applied color work generally does not. Undisclosed overpainting does. Ask for a written record of what was treated and give it to your appraiser.

How long does color work take?

Longer than a cleaning. Each pass of dye has to dry and be evaluated before the next, so the timeline depends on how much of the rug is involved.

Will the new dye rub off or bleed later?

Not when it is set and rinsed properly. After professional rug dyeing, we test for colorfastness by pressing a damp white cloth to the treated area. If anything transfers, the job is not finished.

Can I keep my rug from fading again?

Rotate it 180 degrees twice a year, add UV-filtering film or sheers to south- and west-facing windows, and keep it out of direct afternoon sun. Our guide on how rug fading happens covers the rest.
